Irwin
is known for its festivals. These events bring the people
together for spirited times and enduring community.
Founder’s Day:
Held on the last teen Saturday in November, Founders Day
is a celebration of Samuel Dale Irwin’s founding of
the town. Barksdale Drive is transformed into a carnival-like
atmosphere, with prizes and games available to kids and
a town-wide garage sale for the adults. Watch SkyHank catch
and carve the ceremonial town turkey!
Swoop’n’Mosey:
The Swoop’n’Mosey is a twice-a-year (third weekends
in February and August) showcase in which Irwinians invite
out-of-towners to “Swoop” in and “Mosey”
around. A Friday nigh Fish Fry kicks everything off, featuring
Louisiana catfish coated in a rich and vibrant seasoning
concocted by Irwin’s own Bennie Clemm.
Besides having fun, the primary purpose of the Swoop’n’Mosey
is to showcase area businesses--with sidewalk sales and
turn-back-the-calendar discounts demonstrating Irwin’s
rich history of commerce. While in town, visitors can sample
the cuisine at Irwin’s local dining establishments,
Millie’s and Casa del Food. Or, they can take part
in one of three eating contests: pie, slaw, and—new
in 2002, ’dillo. Live music includes local bands and
the Choral Union Singers, bringing together in harmony the
choirs of six different Irwin-area churches.
